Presentation of the Centre
Örebro University Hospital, including highly specialised care and primary care is the centre of all cancer care in Region Örebro County. It’s a no-profit public organisation run by elected representatives. The centre offers multidisciplinary cancer care for all major cancer diseases, and it is a referral centre for patients from Healthcare region mid-Sweden in selected areas including cancer surgery as well as other oncological procedures. Within the area of penile cancer, it is one of two centres for national highly specialised care.
Main Research Activities
There is a long-standing research commitment in major disease areas i.e. breast and prostate cancer including other urogenital cancers, HPV related cancers, ENT cancer and melanoma. Clinical research using a range of methods including laboratory, epidemiological, registry based, qualitative as well as randomized studies are included in the patient centred research approach. Recently, artificial intelligence, advanced imaging and front-line omnic methods have been added to the methodological portfolio. There is a close collaboration with Örebro University in cancer research.
Core Facilities
Within the research facilities for both the University and the Hospital there are a broad range of support competence including data management, epidemiology, clinical trial units, ATMP facility and advanced imaging and omnic technologies. There are hubs within national collaborative research infrastructures including Clinical Genomics laboratory, Genomic Medicine Centre, Örebro biobank and precision medicine. CAR-T therapy has recently been introduced at the university hospital. Region Örebro County is one of seven stakeholders in the national proton therapy facility.
Education
Örebro University and Region Örebro County/Örebro University Hospital have a longstanding collaborating concerning several educational programs for health professions including nurses, biomedical scientist, occupational therapist and medical school. PhD programs are available in biomedicine, healthcare science, medicine and surgery. Post graduate education for medical doctors is established in almost all specialities relevant to cancer care and cancer research.
