Presentation of the Centre
The Institute began to function on December 1949, when it was initially led by Prof. Dr. Octav Costachel, then by Prof. Dr. Alexandru Trestioreanu. IOB was the first hospital to apply complex methods of treating tumors (chemotherapy, hormone therapy, radiation therapy, and surgery).
At the present moment, the activity of the institute is very complex (over 45,000 outpatient consultations, each year), being represented by the work of medical oncologist, surgeons, radiotherapists and other doctors who take part in the oncological tumor board.
Main Research Activities
The Institute’s research department includes 3 laboratories: Cancer biology laboratory; Chemical carcinogenesis and molecular biology laboratory; Biochemistry and radiobiology laboratory.
A section dedicated to molecular biology studies allowed the development of methods for experiments of extremely high performance, including NGS. Clinical oncology is a research-driven specialty: phase II, III and IV international randomized multicenter studies, observational prospective and retrospective studies on patient cohorts and case-control studies are currently conducted in the Institute.

Education
The IOB departments of General Surgery and Oncology are part of the “Carol Davila” UMF, Faculty of Medicine, with a tradition in teaching medical students.
Each year the congress “The medical and scientific days of IOB” is organised to present the last updates and achievements in the oncological research.
Moreover, IOB is the Headquarters of SNOMR (The National Society of Medical Oncology from Romania, President: Prof. Dr. Dana Stanculeanu), devoted to the care of cancer patients, development of scientific knowledge through research in oncology, medical education and promoting the recruitment of facilities for oncology services.
